A Blustery Day at McArthur Lake

by James H. ByrdProtected by Copyscape. Do not copy.

Today's photos are from a journey to McArthur Lake this afternoon. Although the temperature was comfortably in the 60's, the wind was whipping up the valley from the South, pushing the clouds along and putting a chill in the air.

On our way to the lake, we stopped by Western Pleasure Guest Ranch for a quick visit with Katie's Last Chance (Chance for short), one of the newest members of their horse herd.

5/12/06: No socialization problems here! This little colt is so new to the world that he hasn't even dropped the remains of his umbilical, but he seems very happy to be here. He wasn't too sure about being petted at first, but he decided that a good scratch along the neck and chin sure felt good.

5/12/06: Chance has the biggest brown (and curious) eyes. When we walked up to the fence, we were wondering if we'd be able to get a picture of him before he ran to hide behind his momma, but he walked right up to us instead. Whoa! A little too close there, son!

5/12/06: McArthur Lake is located between Elmira and Naples to the West of Highway 95. You can see it quite clearly from the highway, which is an unfortunate distraction as that point in the road has curves that result in a fatal accident nearly every year. If you want to check it out, please turn off the highway and park in the area provided.

5/12/06: The lake is nestled into the eastern foothills of the Selkirks. It's a small but serene lake, and it's home to an abundance of wildlife.

5/12/06: Anglers can enjoy fishing from several docks, or you can just stand there and contemplate the beauty. Although there is a boat launch, be aware that the lake is closed to boating until June 30 to protect nesting waterfowl.
